Skopje

Skopje

Skopje is the biggest city of North Macedonia, though as for me it still looks like quite and calm Balkan town. I came there because Skopje is a good point to begin exploration of the country and it is worth a visit itself.

Skopje, Old Čaršija

Skopje, Old Čaršija

Before I came to Skopje I knew a few places what I needed to visit. Čarija was one of them. Its a small medieval district what kept the atmosphere of the Ottoman Empire whatd been ruling lands of North Macedonia for centuries!

Skopje, Fortress Kale

Skopje, Fortress Kale

Another must-visit place in Skopje is an old fortress located right near Čarija.

The first fortress was constructed on this place thousands years ago but most of these walls were built and renovated by ottomans in XVIIth century.

There are no lots of things to do inside of it, but its free, nice for waking around and from the walls good view on Skopje opens.

Mountain Vodna

My third must-see point was mountain Vodna. Its located out of the city, but its reachable by a new cable car.

The mountain is interesting because of the huge Millennium Cross constructed right on the top and because of good viewpoints where you can watch splendid green landscapes of the south Balkans.

Vrv Kale

Vrv Kale

By advise from some article what I had found in the Internet I didnt go back to Skopje but I did some hiking up there.

A small wild trail led me to the next peak - Vrv Kale. It was 7 kilometers away from Mountain Vodna but it felt like I was among a wild nowhere. Only tiny red rooftops down in the valley reminded me about existing of civilization.

St. Nikola Šiševski

St. Nikola Šiševski

At some moment even the wild trail disappeared and I only navigated by the small line of water on the horizon. It was supposed to be my final point.

That 'navigator' brought me to a small monastery hidden in the dark woods. It was late evening so there were no one. That made this place even more sacred and spiritual.

Got there by:

Canyon Matka

I came down to the water when the sun had hid behind the mountains. This trail brought me to an empty coast of the huge canyon but all touristic services including kayak renting were on the other side of it. So I had to pass up throug hydroelectric power station what was forbidden!

The canyon is beautiful place but its much easier to come there by taxi or bus. Though Ill never forget this experience.

Got there by:

Ohrid

Ohrid

After such intensive days in Skopje I decided to find the place to relax and I went to Ohrid. Its the small town located on the east coast of the eponymous ancient lake. Its quite, beautiful and its still one of my favorite place on the whole Balkans. No wonder locals are so proud of it.

Got there by:

Ohrid, Church of St. John at Kaneo

Ohrid, Church of St. John at Kaneo

I spent few days in Ohrid and I found this place is definitely on of the best in the town. The small orthodox Church is located right on a steep cliff and the view what opens from there ispriceless.

Magnificent place to watch colorful sunset over the ancient lake. And I gotta say my best sunsets ever were there. I still recall them sometimes.
